Can i just install a new dvd drive to my xbox 360?

ok, so heres the deal. My xbox powers up normally and functions normally still BUT it does not play any type of game, dvd, or cd. I know my xbox has the BENQ DVD Drive so would i be able to just install a new one and have no problems with it?
and would i need to flash it to be able to play games?
