is it possible to use window medial player 11 on ps3?

i was trying to play a video file online with my ps3 but will not open the file. but suggested window media player.
a friend suggest installing linux operating system on my ps3. my fear is that will it not damage the console?

The easiest way is getting Yellow Dog Linux (official Linux system for PS3), but it is still a hustle. Getting wireless with WPA working and few other things may take a while plus you need mouse and keyboard to make it work.
