If I don’t have Xbox Live is there a way for me to play old Xbox games other than the Halos on a 360?

Every time I put in an origional game such as Call of Duty 3 the Xbox 360 tells me I need a software update from Xbox Live. If I don’t have access to Xbox Live is there a way to play this and other old games?
