Is it possible to record videos from console gameplay?

Like is it possible to use a DVD recorder (TV one), and then connect the game console (PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox) to the recorder, and use the DVD recorder to record gameplay? After all, I think it could be possible as I have seen videos of console gameplay that are definitely not taken using a video camera. Anyone tried it? Thanks.
Ok I need help, I connected the console to the DVD recorder with the AV components (red, yellow, white) and I see the game screen on my TV, but when I try to record, it says “Paused for TV system not matching”. Did I plug wrongly?

Yes you can. Just input it to your VCR or DVD recorder like you do with a regular hook up. Put in the RCA jacks or sometimes component cables into the IN on the back and turn on your VCR/DVD recorder. Select the source which should be AUX 1 or 2 so you can see the game on your tv. Then just hit record. It’s just like recording tv.
