how can i tell by looking at the specs if an A/V receiver plays audio through the HDMI cable?

Im looking into buying a new receiver for home theatre use.I have a ps3 and a 360 that i want to hook up direct with HDMI cables.My friend bought a yamaha at BB and was pretty upset to find that when he plugged in his ps3 with an HDMI cable,no sound came through the speakers.He has to run a digital optical cable from his ps3 and cable box to get sound.Since HDMI carries both sound and video,i have no desire to buy and run digital optical cables.The problem i’m having is i am finding it difficult to tell just by looking at receiver specs,which ones only pass through the sound,and which play the sound directly from the HDMI cable to the speakers.What is the technical term for the ability to do this?

Any receiver that can play Dolby-HD or DTS-HD needs to support audio playback over HDMI, it is the only way to get those formats to a receiver!!

I doubt your friend’s receiver can’t decode audio over HDMI, even if it is pass-through only. He simply does not know how to use the receiver.
