All external hard drives work with the Xbox 360 yet?

I met a lot of Xbox 360 and beams, but only comes with version arcade, So no hard drive, I had an Xbox for a long time, and I know she was not an external hard drive worked with them to safeguard information about the game and downloads. I was curious if they have become more compatible or not? I want to buy a hard drive non-Microsoft content. The Xbox is too expensive.
