how do I get the picture on my insigna hd tv during xbox 360 to not be so dark?

I have an insigna 27″ HD TV, and while I am playing games on my XBOX 360 the picture is very dark, and it looks bad. I have tried to play with the picture settings, and still nothing seems to work. Can someone please help me out?
